Invest in a good cover

Investing in a good hot tub cover is a great way to save on your energy bill. A good cover starts with foam twice as dense as the industry average. The next step is keeping moisture off of your cover inserts. Check to ensure the foam is vacuum and heat sealed to prevent moisture from penetrating the foam. Wet and heavy covers result in constantly increasing running costs. Covers must be replaced as soon as they become saturated or soggy because this means that they are no longer able to keep the heat in.

Economy mode

If you’re going to be out of town or simply not going to be using your hot tub for 2 or more days at a stretch, consider setting your hot tub to economy mode which allows you to set the temperature lower. If you will be gone for a long time or during the warm summer months, turning off your heater entirely or setting the temperature as low as possible are great ways to save energy.

Check your filters frequently

Clean filters mean that the pumps don’t have to work as hard to pass water through as they would with dirty filters, thereby reducing your energy consumption. Filters should be cleaned every one to two weeks by washing them under running water to remove any dirt that may be clogging it. Wash out oil and lotion residues every month or two using a cleaning compound.

Blowers, air jets, and spa lights can all enhance your hot tub experience but you pay the price in energy consumption if you are not careful. Because blowers introduce cool air into the hot tub, the heater has to work harder to maintain the water temperature. Try to use them only when needed and at short intervals and remember to turn them off when not in use.
